Apple seems to be focusing on its next-generation iPhone. Gaming certainly has been the hottest selling product for Apple and it would like to capitalize on this segment. No doubt it will have to face stiff competition from the leaders of this segment which includes Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft.
It has hired a team of developers for developing custom applications for its iPhone 5. What they are given is a iPhone 4 device with an A5 chip inside it.
Going back to the history, A5 was launched with iPad2 early this year. The chip is manufactured by Samsung and will power the future generations of iPhone and iPod touch. Loaded with a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU and a dual core PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, A5 is expected to take gaming on the iPhone to the next level. PowerVR offers one of the best graphics processing architecture in the market considering the fact that it has been developed by world’s largest graphics engineers’ team.
Apple claimed that the A5 is twice as fast in terms of speed as its predecessor A4. Also in terms of graphics performance it is nine times more efficient. However, A5 will still be a low power consuming chip like A4 and would offer battery life of about 10 hours. These features have made it the most suitable choice for Apple for its next generation devices.
One of the insiders shared the information that the device they are currently working on is referred to as “iPhone 4S”. The device shares the same exteriors as to iPhone 4 with the latest A5 processor inside to test the applications developed for iPhone 5. These devices are still running on iOS 4, though the iPhone 5 is expected to be on iOS 5.
Apple faced pressure in terms of upgrading iPhone to a more powerful mobile gaming platform after the launch of devices such as Xperia Play in the market. The new hardware is expected to give its users a more immersive gaming experience with a more high-end AI and realistic physics. The changes will need revamping of the whole iPhone gaming ecosystem with more sophisticated and high-end games on iPhone’s app store.
Meanwhile, the rumors are that iPhone 5 will be launched somewhere around September this year. There are few changes to be expected in terms of design. Apple rather would be focusing more on the hardware with the A5 chip, 8 megapixel camera, a doubled internal memory up to 64 GB and probably even a Qualcomm Gobi chip.
There also have been rumors regarding low-end iCloud iPhone that would let users store data on Apple’s iCloud service. Also, gaming related updates are expected to be released at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference 2011.
